Abstract The use of e-mail (the internet and cellular phone technology) as a potential electronic medium for conducting a survey is discussed. The paper focuses on the methodology, shortfalls, profile of respondents, reply statistics and some 'netiquette' tips used in the electronic-survey (e-survey). 95 electronic mails (e-mails) were sent to individual agriculturalists and the survey placed on two discussion lists/listserves. The key question asked was: 'What do South African farmers need to do to survive and prosper in the new millenium'. Given the poor response to the e-survey that was achieved, the paper considers possible reasons to be: numerous errors made in conducting the survey; the newness to the target group (i.e., agriculturalists) of such a survey; and the lack of interest in the topic.
